Issue 02 of Mountain Athlete Journal will be published in early winter 2027. We’re accepting submissions from writers, artists, poets, and photographers for inclusion in the issue. Submission deadline is October 1st, 2026.

We’re looking for expressions of the mountain athletic experience that capture movement and meaning in print form. If you have a compelling story to tell through your writing, art, photography, or poetry, we'd love to publish it. We're interested in the depth and reflection, emotion and insight, and sensory character of endurance sports in the mountains that lies beyond absolute performance.

Examples of what we’d like to publish include:

  • Short-form essays of roughly 800-1,500 words

  • Feature essays of 1,500-3,000+ words

  • Poetry

  • Photo essays or standalone imagery

  • Other visual art: illustration, painting, mixed media, etc. as standalone pieces or part of a larger feature, scanned and suitable for print.

To submit, visit this form with everything you need to know. Alternatively, you may email us at submissions@mountainathletejournal.com with a short proposal/pitch with your idea and links to previous works. But please read the guidelines in the form to see what we are and aren’t looking for.

A note on Artificial Intelligence:

I believe we must resist AI’s tightening grasp on the arts. A major reason I started Mountain Athlete Journal was to help preserve the beauty of creative, human-made, print media.

We hold a strict no AI-generated or assisted writing or visual art policy.

Just please don’t. It’s OK if what you make isn’t 100% perfectly polished. In fact, the realness and sometimes out there stuff is exactly what we want to publish here. We’ll work with you on editing if it needs it.

I look forward to seeing what you might share.

Keep moving; keep creating.
